This open competitive advertisement is for an SES (Select Exempt Services) position located in Central Office within the Office of Institutional Operations, Bureau of Classification Management.
This position is not a Telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.
The Florida Department of Corrections is seeking a highly experienced and dynamic individual to serve as the Bureau Chief of Classification Management within the Office of Institutional Operations. The incumbent will be responsible for directing the activities of Classification services; systems and public records; and Work Release Units within the bureau. This executive-level position plays a critical role in shaping and overseeing the classification and management of inmates across the state. The incumbent must be committed to upholding the agency values and be dedicated to facilitating the agency mission.
Compensation Range: $106,822.82-$112,730.54
Specific Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develops and implements policies, plans and strategies in support of the agency's mission to protect the public, staff, and inmates. Implements strategies and objectives in the agency's Strategic Plan that are relevant to the bureau.
- Assists the Director of Institutional Operations with budgeting, policy development, planning, legislative issues, and operational matters.
- Reviews, analyzes and proposes legislation, and assists executive staff on issues related to legislation. Establishes policies and provides oversight to ensure the efficient and effective processing of newly received inmates, including risk and needs assessments.
- Oversees policies related to inmate classification, management, gain time, discipline, reclassification, transfer, transition, and release.
- Ensures that youthful offender and female offender classification and inmate management responsibilities are appropriately met.
- Directs enhancements to the Offender Based Information System (OBIS) and develops automated systems to support the inmate classification system.
- Establishes quality improvement programs and training initiatives.
- Supervises, motivates, trains, evaluates, and directs the work of employees, with authority to hire, transfer or discipline subordinate staff.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for the role include, but are not limited to the following:
- Comprehensive knowledge in correctional management, inmate classification, or another related field.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing policies and strategies at an executive level.
- Strong understanding of legislative processes and skilled in reviewing and proposing legislation.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to oversee and direct multiple units and initiatives simultaneously.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience with the Florida Department of Corrections of which five (5) of those years were at the level of Classification Supervisor or higher.
- Must have at least three (3) years of progressive leadership experience in correctional management, criminal justice, or another related field.
- Must have demonstrated a proven record of strong, executive-level, decision-making; policy development; operational oversight; ability to lead and manage large teams; and implementation of strategic initiatives.
