The Florida Department of Corrections is seeking qualified applicants for Assistant Warden positions across the state. Selected candidates will be held to a high standard of professionalism and leadership to staff, offenders and the public and will be expected to represent the Florida Department of Corrections at all times through social media, official Department of Corrections events and conduct in daily interactions with the public.

Salary:

$95,229.68 ($3,662.68 biweekly)

Required Qualifications:

  • Be at least 18 years of age (no maximum age restriction)
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Pass a drug test and physical examination
  • Pass a background investigation and fingerprinting, which includes; no felony convictions; no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement; no misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence.
  • Must demonstrate good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Ten years of correctional experience.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as an Assistant Warden or above with the Florida Department of Corrections.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

These positions are directly responsible for assisting the Warden in administering and directing the institution’s programs and/or the day-to-day operations of the institution. It provides direction and supervision of institutional operations and facilities in the absence of the Warden. The Assistant Warden of Programs (AWP) is responsible for administering, supervising, and developing programs, policies and procedures in the areas of the correctional programs at the institution.  The Assistant Warden of Operations (AWO) is responsible for the administration of all security operations within the institutional setting to include developing and reviewing policies and procedures, ensuring equitable enforcement staffing and safety processes, and overall security of the facility.

  • Assists the Warden in supervising and managing the operation of the institution and enforcement of institutional operating procedures.  
  • Supervises the department heads, maintains close daily contact, visits work areas, attends department meetings and holds program staff meetings.
  • Assists in formulating new policies and procedures in either the institutional operations (AWO) or inmate programs (AWP) areas of responsibility and improve existing practices, policies and procedures.  Maintains open lines of communication with staff by conducting meetings to plan and disseminate information.
  • Assists the Warden in completion of special projects assigned to the institution.  Serves as a member, chairman, or co-chairman of various institutional committees and teams.
  • Assists in resolving institutional emergencies and provides assistance to outside law enforcement agencies as needed.  Monitor/assist in investigations of accidents, deaths, and contraband situations.
  • Maintains contact with inmates, verbally and in writing, in order to assist with various concerns that arise.  Implements and follows up with this process by personal intervention or referral to the proper party.
  • Answers correspondence and/or telephone calls from court officials, law enforcement agencies, institutional employees, inmates, members of inmate families, and the general public.  
  • Reviews incident reports, reports of investigation, etc. involving potential staff discipline problems.  Makes recommendation for disposition to the Warden.
  • Investigates and evaluates inmate grievances filed by inmates at the institution.  Takes necessary action resulting from findings, as necessary.
  • Monitors standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections to ensure continuing compliance which involves reporting and/or reviewing requirements and pursuing of plans of action.
  • Develops, implements and monitors institutional compliance with Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards.
  • Assists the Warden with the development and implementation of sound budgetary principles, the tracking and documentation of expenditures and short- and long-term budgetary planning. 
  • Assists the Warden with human resource operations including recruitment, selection, onboarding, leave and attendance, and employee discipline. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Knowledge of policies and practices involved in personnel/human resource functions.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes involved in business and organizational planning, coordination, and execution. This may include strategic planning, resource allocation, manpower modeling, leadership techniques, and production methods.
  • Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques including curriculum design principles, learning theory, group and individual teaching techniques, design of individual development plans, and test design principles.
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance, mental processes, psychological research methods, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Skills in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.

  • Skilled in the development and presentation of training, professional development and succession of command of correctional professionals.

  • Ability to know how to find information and identifying essential information.
