The Florida Department of Corrections is seeking qualified applicants for Warden positions across the state. Selected candidates will be held to a high standard of professionalism and leadership to staff, offenders and the public and will be expected to represent the Florida Department of Corrections at all times through social media, official Department of Corrections events and conduct in daily interactions with the public.  

Under the direction of Secretary, Ricky Dixon, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is the third largest state prison system in the country with approximately 83,000 inmates incarcerated and another 166,000 offenders on active community supervision. The DC has 151 facilities and more than 24,000 staff members statewide, making it the State’s largest agency.

Salary:

$114,274.68 annually ($4,395.18 biweekly)

Required Qualifications:

• Be at least 18 years of age (no maximum age restriction)
• Be authorized to work in the United States
• Possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Pass a drug test and physical examination
• Pass a background investigation and fingerprinting, which includes; no felony convictions; no misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement; no misdemeanor conviction of domestic violence.
• Must demonstrate good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
• Twelve (12) years of correctional experience.
• Three (3) years’ experience as an Assistant Warden or above with the Florida Department of Corrections.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Warden is the Institution’s executive manager and provides top level management which includes, but is not limited to, operational oversight in the areas of security, custody and control, personnel administration (i.e., hiring, separation, discipline and promotion of staff), purchasing, policy and procedures interpretation/formulation, collective bargaining administration, general services, and accounting/budget matters within the institution. This position is comprised of managerial responsibilities and is a position of special trust overseeing the administration and coordination of the operations of an institution. Other duties may include the following:

• The Warden shall be responsible for the incarceration, protection of society and control of offenders assigned to the Correctional Institution and for the proper operation of the institution.
• The Warden will initiate and oversee the Offender Operational Plan.
• The Warden makes recommendations through the Regional Director for changes to existing policy or procedure or implementation of new policy or procedure by identifying and addressing institutional needs.
• The Warden is also responsible for maintaining the accreditation of the institution with the American Correctional Association.
• The Warden organizes staff and supervises the operations of the institution by direction, coordination, and assisting in the planning of offender work, discipline and self-help programs.
• The Warden is responsible for stimulating good public relations with the community, press and governmental and civic organizations by participating in community activities. The Warden must also establish and maintain good relations with courts and other area law enforcement agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

• Knowledge of policies and practices involved in personnel/human resource functions.
• Knowledge of principles and processes involved in business and organizational planning, coordination, and execution. This may include strategic planning, resource allocation, manpower modeling, leadership techniques, and production methods.
• Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques including curriculum design principles, learning theory, group and individual teaching techniques, design of individual development plans, and test design principles.
• Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
• Knowledge of human behavior and performance, mental processes, psychological research methods, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
• Skills in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.
• Skills in communicating effectively with others in writing as indicated by the needs of the audience. Skills in talking to others to effectively convey information.
• Skills in identifying the things that must be changed to achieve a goal.  
• Skills in developing an image of how a system should work under ideal conditions.  
• Skills in generating a number of different approaches to problems.
• Skills in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job.
• Skilled in the development and presentation of training, professional development and succession of command of correctional professionals.
• Skills in communicating effectively with others orally and in writing.
• Ability to know how to find information and identifying essential information.
