Description of duties: The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two Offices. This exciting and highly technical position provides informational, ArcGIS, and database management support to the Wildlife and Habitat Management (WHM) section. This position will be part of a team of employees within the WHM Habitat Assessment and Restoration Program (HARP) that works to support FWC managed areas statewide in achieving enhanced wildlife management outcomes.
The successful candidate will need to have detailed knowledge and experience with geographic information systems (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online), relational database development and administration, managing and maintaining a centralized database for various end users, current wildlife population monitoring and survey techniques, and wildlife taxonomy. The incumbent will work directly with HARP staff, other FWC staff, and contractors for the maintenance and enhancement of the WHM Land Management Information System (LMIS), associated web queries, add-in tools, deployment packages, and training materials. The LMIS includes three primary modules (Area Managers Tool [AMT], Survey and Monitoring Protocols [SaMP], and TechStaff). While this position will be responsible for maintenance of the overall LMIS system, the position will have direct responsibility for the SaMP module that is used to enter spatial data for opportunistic observations of plants and wildlife and established survey and monitoring data. Primary SaMP responsibilities will include: recommending and beta testing enhancements of SaMP data and query tools; building relational databases for newly established protocols; enhancing existing protocols to meet changes or adjustments; standardizing protocols to be area/regional/state applicable to systematic queries; quality assurance and control of input data to include utilization of currently accepted common and scientific names; upload of large datasets collected by contractors and others; summarization and analysis of data; development of common, imperiled, and nonnative species lists for area management plans; and development of training materials for WHM staff and others. Additionally, this position provides ArcGIS and informational support to the Wildlife Conservation Prioritization and Recovery (WCPR) program in the development of Wildlife Management Strategies that detail management and monitoring actions that promote and facilitate the persistence of imperiled and locally important wildlife species on FWC managed areas; serves as a point of contact for Fish & Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) researchers, other Agency staff, and outside entities in providing and/or obtaining data; updating or developing potential habitat models for imperiled and locally important species; and other informational support as needed. In addition, this position will provide general ArcGIS support, training, and assistance to WHM staff.
This position will also be responsible for assisting with the development of annual work plans, budget proposals, reports, project specifications, procurement, contract management, administrative tasks, assisting with WMA field surveys and monitoring efforts, and other duties as assigned. In addition, the incumbent will need to embrace a teaming approach and interact professionally and cooperatively with various staff, contractors, and partners. Occasional overnight travel will be required to attend workshops, meetings, and training.
Required knowledge, skills and abilities include:
- Detailed knowledge of ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online and its application to land management activities and wildlife/plant surveys
- Detailed knowledge of relational spatial database development and management
- Knowledgeable in principles of wildlife ecology and habitat management
- Knowledge of the taxonomy of native, nonnative, and imperiled species of Florida
- Experience in building/maintaining/enhancing/restructuring survey and monitoring spatial databases for established protocols used on the WMA system.
- Experience with managing, summarizing, and analyzing survey and monitoring data
- Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Ability to occasionally work outdoors under harsh weather conditions
- Ability to plan and prioritize work assignments and multi-task under a heavy workload
- Ability to work outside of normal business hours as necessary
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills

Level of Education: Bachelor of Science degree in a life or physical sciences, geography/GIS, or database management related field is preferred. Four years of direct, relevant experience may substitute for the Bachelor of Science degree. Preference will be given to applicants with GIS and relational spatial database experience related to wildlife/plant surveys and monitoring.
Other Requirements: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Must possess and maintain a valid minimum Class E State of Florida driver’s license.
