The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is a nationally accredited state law enforcement agency charged with enforcing the laws of Florida and ensuring the safety of the motoring public. Through its motto of “Courtesy, Service and Protection” and a comprehensive education and enforcement plan along with state–of-the-art training, equipment and technology, FHP provides professional law enforcement services to Florida’s 21 million residents and 110 million annual visitors while patrolling the state’s highways.


After obtaining two years of experience, Troopers are eligible for specialty positions such as Criminal Interdiction Unit (including K-9), Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence, Traffic Homicide Investigations, Dignitary Protection, Specialized DUI Enforcement, Instructor, Motorcycle Unit, Occupant Protection specialist, Recruiter/Background Investigator, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, Pilot, Public Affairs Officer, Quick Reaction Force, Special Response Team, and many more! Troopers with five years of experience are eligible to promote to supervisory positions.


Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age (no maximum age restriction), be a citizen of the United States, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid operator or commercial drive license and be willing to accept an initial assignment anywhere in the State of Florida.


Applicants must also possess ONE of the following: - Two years of active continuous U.S. military service with an honorable discharge, 30 semester or 45-quarter hours of college credit from an accredited college or university, one year of law enforcement experience (sworn or non-sworn) or two years of work experience in which the applicant had significant public contact.


Minimum Physical Requirements:  An applicant’s height and weight must be proportional, they must possess visual acuity of 20/30 (with or without correction) in each eye with 140-degree field of vision, and have normal color-distinguishing capabilities. Applicants must successfully complete the physical abilities test and pass a medical exam.


Selection Process – Selection is a three-to-six-month process that consists of the following: 1. Completed State of Florida Employment Application, 2. Successfully complete the Florida/Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test for Law Enforcement (not applicable to applicants who possess active Florida law enforcement certification), 3. Completed FHP Supplemental Application, 4. Successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test, 5. Polygraph Exam, 6. Psychological Exam, 7. Medical Exam, 8. Vision Exam, 9. Drug analysis, 10. Fingerprinting, and 11. Background Investigation.


All out-of-state applicants may be required to make multiple trips to Florida to complete the selection process.

Academy – Recruits receive pay and benefits while attending the FHP Training Academy, which is located just west of Tallahassee, Florida. The challenging and physically demanding training curriculum is delivered in a regimented, para-military environment that instills the discipline and skills necessary for the unique demands placed on our Troopers.  All recruits participate in physical conditioning exercises each day. FHP provides lodging, meals and study materials. Recruits are required to reside at the academy during training but may leave most weekends. All recruits must purchase their own training uniforms and physical training equipment.


Duty Assignments - Duty assignments are determined based upon position availability and agency needs. Upon graduation, Troopers are assigned to patrol operations, whose primary functions consist of enforcing the State's criminal and traffic laws, regulating the flow of traffic, assisting motorists, performing vehicle inspections, detecting and apprehending impaired drivers, apprehending fugitives from justice, investigating traffic crashes and assisting other agencies upon request. Recruits may receive a duty assignment anywhere in the State of Florida.


Basic Recruit Course – All basic recruits must complete approximately 29 weeks of training at the Florida Highway Patrol Training Academy. This training is required to take the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission Law Enforcement Exam. New recruits without law enforcement experience and/or Florida Law Enforcement Certification must attend the Basic Recruit Course. All recruits must successfully complete the state law enforcement officer certification examination.


Transitional Recruit Course – Applicants who are Florida certified law enforcement officers, with or without law enforcement experience, may attend an eight-week transitional academy.


Lateral Recruit Course – Applicants who are Florida certified law enforcement officers, with a minimum of two-years of law enforcement patrol experience, may attend an eight-week academy. Lateral applicants will be evaluated on an individual basis to ensure they have sufficient experience to reach an equivalent level of proficiency as the Basic Recruits after 29 weeks of training and Transitional Recruits after 8 weeks of training.


Out-of-state equivalency - Out-of-state law enforcement officers must obtain their Florida Law Enforcement Certification to apply for the Transitional or Lateral Recruit Courses. FHP does not offer this certification option. Equivalency of Training information is available at


Starting Salaries


Statewide - $38,034.24 annually ($3,169.52 monthly) Trainee

                    $41,917.56 annually ($3,493.13 monthly) Probationary


Broward, Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach Counties - $46,917.36 annually ($3,909.78 monthly)


Those that live and work in Alachua, Baker, Brevard, Charlotte, Clay, Collier, Duval, Escambia, Flagler, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Nassau, Orange, Osceola,  Pasco, Pinellas, Santa Rosa, Sarasota, St. Johns, and Volusia Counties - $46,917.36 annually ($3,909.78 monthly)


Those that live and work in Monroe County - $49,917.36 annually ($4,159.78 monthly).


Dry Cleaning Allowance - $500 annually


Incentive Payments up to $130 monthly
