The Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) is a customer-oriented agency responsible for managing various business-related functions throughout state government. Under the direction of Governor Rick Scott and DMS’ Executive Leadership Team, the agency oversees the real estate, procurement, human resources, group insurance, retirement, telecommunications, private prisons, and fleet and federal property assistance programs utilized throughout Florida’s state government. The Department of Management Services is relied upon to establish, maintain and improve the business processes used by state employees to create a better, not bigger government.  The Department of Management Services facilitates the delivery of these programs and services and provides tools and training to bolster the efficiency and effectiveness of the state’s workforce. Position responsibilities:

This position works for the Grounds Section, and is responsible for providing the necessary support and assistance in this role. This position requires at least one year experience as a groundskeeper. Employee is required to know names of the more common plants, be able to identify insect or disease conditions on plants, have knowledge of proper plant maintenance techniques, including mowing, pruning, and cleanup. This position must be able to work independently, be able to follow directions and instructions, and have the skills to serve as a crew leader from time to time.

Duties and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Maintenance of lawns, shrubs and trees, watering landscapes, setting annuals, fertilization of lawns and landscape plants, spraying insecticides and fungicides. Weeding of landscape; raking and disposal of leaves and trash. Operation and maintenance of grounds keeping equipment. Performs trash control duties, light custodial duties and other duties as required. The employee in this position shall obey all safety rules, shall exercise care in the course of employment, communicate to their supervisor any hazardous situations or conditions which may place individuals or others in jeopardy and shall assist and support other employees with safety responsibilities.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to identify common plants, be able to identify insect or disease conditions on plants.
  • Knowledge of proper plant maintenance technique, including mowing, pruning, and cleanup.
  • Ability to operate all equipment used by the Grounds Section including but not limited to all lawn mowing equipment, weed eaters, blowers, tractors and line marking equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of lawn care experience.
  • Must have a valid and applicable driver’s license.

Position requires:

  • Prolonged periods of time walking, standing, bending, lifting up to 30 lbs. and the use of all types of ladders.
  • Prolonged periods of sedentary work which involves repetitive motion.
  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Use of hand or power tools or equipment.
  • Ability to drive trucks or other vehicles to or at work sites.
