Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This position is located at the Capitol Complex in Tallahassee Florida. This position requires at least one year’s experience as a groundskeeper. The Employee is required to know names of the more common plants, be able to identify insect or disease conditions on plants, have knowledge of proper plant maintenance techniques, including mowing, pruning, and cleanup. This position must be able to work independently, be able to follow directions and instructions, and have the skill to serve as a crew leader from time to time.
General Responsibilities:
The Incumbent filling this position is responsible for independently:
Mowing and edging lawns, trimming hedges and shrubs, watering landscapes, setting annuals, fertilization of lawns and landscape plants, spraying insecticides and fungicides. Raking and disposal of leaves and trash. Operation and maintenance of groundskeeping equipment, including tractors and backhoe. Weeding landscape. Performs trash control duties, light custodial duties and other duties as required. Excellent public relation skills are required since this position is in continuous contact with both tenants and the public. It is required that courteous and respectful behavior is displayed at all times, plus conveying a professional image is needed as this position is a representative of the department to both the public and tenants.
Acts as a crew leader when instructed by supervisor. Directs, monitors, and inspects work performed by crew members to include spray operations, landscape installations, maintenance, or other jobs as necessary.
Assists supervisor, when instructed, in keeping records collecting data and handling administrative paperwork relating to Grounds Section operations. When necessary, special projects may be assigned by supervisor which may be performed independently or in conjunction with other employees.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of groundskeeping and landscaping horticultural techniques.
- Ability to operate lawn equipment including but not limited to all lawn mowing equipment, weed eaters, blowers, tractors, and line marking equipment (non-routine, as needed)

Minimum Qualifications:
- One year of lawncare experience.
- A valid and applicable driver’s license.
- Physical Characteristics: able to climb multiple flights of stairs, climb a ladder, reach overhead, work from heights, bend at the waist, kneel and crouch, prolonged periods of time walking, standing and exerting up to 30 pounds of force frequently. Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
