Duties and Responsibilities

This position reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor and is responsible for the maintenance of lawns, trees and landscaping to the Neil Kirkman Building (NKB) complex.  This position cleans and maintains the complex parking lots and sidewalks.  This position is also responsible for performing routine and preventative maintenance on the irrigation system and all groundskeeping equipment at the NKB complex.  This position will also perform custodial duties on an as needed basis.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of common landscaping plant types.
  • Knowledge of common weed, insect and pest types.
  • Knowledge of common treatment methods for common weeds, insects and pests.
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping best practices including proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to follow schedules, prioritize multiple tasks and solve practical problems.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Skilled in the operation of groundskeeping equipment and tools to include, but not limited to riding and push mowers, weed-eaters, blowers, edgers, hedge trimmers and miscellaneous landscaping equipment with fuel-powered small engines.
  • Skilled in preventative maintenance requirements of abovementioned equipment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 2 consecutive years of professional work experience performing groundskeeping work in a non-residential setting such as an office complex within the past 10 years.

 

Job Related Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent to have and maintain a valid driver’s license in good standing. This means there can be no cancellations, suspensions, or revocations for a minimum of three years prior to employment and for the duration of employment. There can be no more than three chargeable crashes or any violation of Chapter 316, Florida Statutes, during any consecutive three-year period prior to and throughout employment. Do you have a valid driver license that meets these standards?
  • Lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs. for short distances. 
  • Bending, squatting, climbing ladders, etc. while using tools. 
  • Operate equipment such as a commercial lawnmower, edger, weed-eater, blower, pressure washer, utility vehicle(s), etc. in complete assigned tasks. 
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time in both controlled indoor environments as well as outdoor environments exposed to extreme weather.

 

General Information

  • The elements of the selection process may include a skill assessment and/or oral interview.
  • Applicants being considered for employment will be required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation, which will include a check of the criminal history records of the FBI.  Fingerprints and associated information/biometrics will be retained in the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system and fingerprints may continue to be compared against fingerprints submitted to or retained by NGI.
  • FLHSMV employees are paid once a month on the last workday of each month.  All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.
