MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in laboratory work. 

 

College or vocational/technical training can substitute at the rate of 30 semester, 45 quarter or 720 classroom hours for each year of the required experience provided such education includes three courses in the physical and/or natural sciences. 

 

Certain positions within this class require individuals to meet specific federal or state regulations as identified by the employing agency.

JOB DUTIES:

 

As a Bureau sample custodian, logs samples into the Bureau using established protocol ensuring chain-of-custody and assures a sample’s integrity throughout its life in the laboratory.

 

Ensures samples are prepared for further analysis, such as weighing and collating paperwork, as required.  May perform a variety of Bureau laboratory support functions, media and reagent preparation, and/or physical tests and analyses of foods in a timely manner, usually non-instrumental; provides results to supervisor or senior analyst for review.

 

Works with supervisor, staff and Bureau quality manager to ensure quality assurance and ultimately, improvement, as required under International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 17025.   Receives equipment and supplies.  Works to make inventories (equipment and chemical/reagent/supplies) current and complete. Provides support to State Hemp Program.

 

Strives to ensure proper working of the Bureau, including participation in the care and maintenance of laboratory equipment; ensures laboratory and work areas are clean and orderly.

 

Maintains personal expertise in analytical procedures, quality assurance and improvement through self-motivation. Complies with state and department policies and procedures for analysis of foods. Performs related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

  • Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of the physical or natural sciences. 
  • Knowledge of the procedures, equipment and material used in the laboratory testing and analysis. 
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic. 
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials. 
  • Ability to collect, record and analyze laboratory data. 
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions relating to laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Ability to perform laboratory tests and analyses. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. 
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetical calculations. 
  • Ability to comply with strict procedural and quality control/quality assurance guidelines in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. 
  • Ability to use laboratory computer applications (email, data processing, spreadsheet, database, word processing) in a networked environment. 
  • Ability work in a team environment with other analysts.
