Your Specific Responsibilities: 
This position serves as a Legal Assistant for the Florida Department of Health’s Office of the General Counsel, Administrative Practice Group.  This is a full-time (40-hours per week) career service position.  
This is a highly responsible position, providing administrative support to attorneys in the practice of public health law, including the Department of Health’s trauma, vital statistics, emergency medical oversight, community health, medical marijuana, communicable disease, and environmental health programs.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Preferred candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: good writing and organizational skills; knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage; good reading comprehension; ability to communicate effectively; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to work well within a team; ability to work independently and to multitask; ability to receive direction and meet deadlines on a daily basis; ability to research; ability to draft documents; knowledge of legal processes; knowledge of legal terminology.  Strong computer skills and MS Office computer literacy are required. 


Examples of work performed:
•    Drafts and prepares a variety of letters and other correspondence for programmatic administration, under the supervision of an attorney
•    Maintains logs for and coordinate subpoena reviews and public records requests that are handled by the Administrative Practice Group.
•    Ensures the integrity and confidentiality of information and records, consistent with state law and department security protocols and procedures. 
•    Drafts and prepares a variety of legal documents for the attorneys, such as petitions, notices, motions, orders, and all other required pleadings and correspondence to be filed in circuit, county, and in administrative proceedings, under the supervision of an attorney.
•    Serves as administrative liaison to the clerks of courts, judicial assistants, private attorneys, court reporters, and Department of Health employees
•    Assists attorneys with meeting invites, calendaring items, and other administrative duties as needed
•    Performs related work as required, including emergency duty beyond normal work hours or days should the Department of Health activate and deploy staff resources to respond to a public health emergency.
•    Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Legal Counsel.
