Legislative Analyst (Office of the Minority Leader)
General Summary:
This individual functions as a technical expert to the Office of the Minority Leader, legislators, and the public on the subject matter under for the subject matter areas to which they are assigned. It is expected these subject areas will include Agriculture, Natural Resources, General Government, and Transportation. Under close supervision of the staff director, the legislative analyst applies their expertise when researching and preparing documents; responding to inquiries; generating and delivering briefings; contributing to communications strategies; developing and providing resources, and offering problem-solving assistance to legislators and staff.
Financial Disclosure:
Pursuant to sections 112.3144 and 112.3145, F.S., this position is required to electronically file a Form 1 – Statement of Financial Interests with the Florida Commission on Ethics within 30 days of hire.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Monitors the progress of legislation through committees of reference and on the floor.
- Analyzes legislation suggesting strategies for engagement.
- Briefs members on legislation and policy developments.
- Creates impactful resources related to legislation to help legislators and their staff communicate with their district.
- Researches and monitors current events related to proposed legislation, and organizes and presents written reports in a clear detailed format.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication, organizational, and writing skills.
- Knowledge of Florida state government.
- Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and to contribute to the efficient internal functioning of the office staff.
- Knowledge of professional workplace standards, including expectations for appropriate attire, conduct, and representation of the office.
- Ability to manage time effectively, demonstrating punctuality, meeting deadlines, and maintaining reliable attendance.
- Skill in collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders to support a positive, respectful, and team-oriented work environment.
- Ability to monitor and respond to electronic communication in a timely manner.
- Ability to organize data into logical format for presentation in reports and other written materials.
- Ability to produce quality work under pressure.
- Ability to work more than core business hours as needed during committee weeks, regular session, special sessions, and during other exceptional circumstances.
- Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of professional experience in research, analysis, program planning and evaluation, or administrative work.
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one year of the required experience.
- A doctorate from an accredited college or university can substitute for two years of the required experience.
- Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.
Base Salary:
Commensurate with experience
