Maintenance Support Technician

The Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) is a customer-oriented agency responsible for managing the various business and workforce-related functions of state government. Under the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis and DMS’ Executive Leadership Team, the agency oversees the real estate, procurement, human resources, group insurance, retirement, technology, private prisons, fleet, and federal property assistance programs utilized throughout Florida’s state government. Position responsibilities:

This position is responsible to a Groundskeeping Supervisor I, II, or III or a Landscape and Groundskeeping Superintendent. This position must be able to work independently, be able to follow directions and instructions, and have the skills to serve as a crew leader in the absence of the supervisor. This incumbent shall provide assistance in maintaining the Capitol Center Grounds.  Specifically, this position assists in maintaining irrigation systems.  The incumbent will also perform work maintaining trees and shrubs by trimming, fertilizing, and transplanting.


  • Assists in repair and maintenance of irrigation systems to include repairing heads, inventory, repairing lines, etc.
  • Also performs work maintaining trees and shrubs to include trimming, fertilizing, transplanting, etc.
  • Operates mechanized equipment in the care and maintenance of Capitol Center Grounds.  Including turf, trees, shrubs, ground covers, annuals planting or other such plant materials.
  • Mows and edges turf, trims hedges and shrubs, waters landscape, plants foliage materials and other jobs associated with these actions.
  • Installs and operates traffic flow control systems.  Uses flags, cones, signage and other devices.
  • Cleans grounds of trash and debris as required.
  • Checks fuel, oil, water, brakes, tires and equipment cleanliness as required 


  • Incumbent maintains good public relations with peers, supervision and tenants in the building. 
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationship with others.
  • Responds to all requests and inquiries in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Keeps supervisor fully informed regarding work-related activities, relevant issues, upcoming events and potential problems.
  • Ensures requests for leave are submitted and approved in accordance with established rules and division procedures.


  • Performs groundskeeping duties as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience with lawn care and/or irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of proper plant maintenance technique, including mowing, pruning, and cleanup.
  • Ability to operate all equipment used by the Grounds Section including but not limited to all lawn mowing equipment, weed eaters, blowers, tractors and line marking equipment.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to model behaviors of Accountability, Communication, Empowerment, Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Teamwork.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year of lawn care experience AND one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings, plumbing or electrical or mechanical equipment. Vocational/technical training in mechanical repair or one of the building trades can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours.
  • Physical Characteristics: able to climb multiple flights of stairs, climb a ladder, reach overhead, work from heights, bend at the waist, kneel and crouch, prolonged periods of time walking, standing and exerting up to 30 pounds of force frequently. Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather. Ability to operate all equipment used by the Grounds Section including but not limited to all lawn mowing equipment, weed eaters, blowers, tractors and line marking equipment.
  • Valid and applicable driver’s license.
  •  Adheres to established safety procedures and practices in the work area.
