General Summary

The Florida Legislature is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to design, implement, maintain, and support a growing network infrastructure. This position is in the Office of Legislative Information Technology Services’ Network Team which is responsible for designing and developing scalable, maintainable, highly available network architectures.


This is work engineering the selection, installation, performance, and maintenance of the legislative network. An employee in a position allocated to this class will typically provide hardware and software configuration expertise in networking, and host systems. 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain Cisco based LAN/WAN/Data Center network and associated infrastructure
  • Install, Configure, implement, and support new networking technologies and lifecycle replacements
  • Configuration and operation of network security, monitoring, and analysis support systems. (Cisco ASA Firewalls)
  • Utilize monitoring and management systems for ensuring proactive performance and trouble analysis. Familiarity with Zenoss, AppResponse Expert, Armis, Defense Center, Cisco DNA, and APC UPS Manager
  • Administrate Cisco Wireless Controller, ISE and Prime
  • Configure and manage Meraki appliances
  • Manage Zenoss and MRTG (Linux servers)
  • Manage device inventory (device list and maintenance contracts, fiber paths, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to be resourceful and act independently with project assignments
  • Ability to work on-site during normal business hours and the position will occasionally require working after business hours and on weekends to complete project tasks and/or incident resolution during on-call rotation
  • Provide Visio diagrams

  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical data. Ability to design programs and systems.

  • Ability to evaluate and resolve user problems. 
  • Ability to develop various reports including technical information systems reports. 
  • Ability to provide technical assistance in the areas of computer systems analysis, databases, and/or hardware. 
  • Ability to communicate technical information verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Ability to act in the capacity of an Information Systems Chief in his or her absence.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, mathematics, or engineering and three years of progressively responsible information systems experience. 


Progressively responsible information systems experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education. 


Any combination of progressively responsible information systems experience and post-secondary training in disciplines as described above totaling seven years.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated proficiencies in the following areas:

  • Strong knowledge of IT network business in switching and routing
  • Strong Knowledge of TCP/IP and service port numbers
  • Strong communication, written, and customer service skills
  • High aptitude and willingness to learn new technologies
  • Experience with Cisco switches, routers and firewalls
  • A self-starter that can work with minimal supervision; highly organized
  • Collaboration with other OLITS support teams
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve networking connectivity issues
  • Understand OSPF, EIGRP, BGP and static routes 
  • Understand NAT, VPN, SSH, LAN and WAN 
  • Understand wireless AP, VTP, DHCP, and Ether Channels
  • Understand Cisco ASA firewall, access control rule, and security zones
  • Knowledge of receptacle types and fiber cable types
  • Experience with Linux administration is a plus
  • Previous work with IT networking field and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or equivalent industrial certificates are essential to this position.  IT network security experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Cisco routing, switching, load-balancing, firewall, and wireless technologies
  • Experience supporting an MS Windows based services infrastructure and related services
  • Experience DNS, TCP/IPv4, and Security best practices
  • Advanced Cisco and/or Security Certifications
  • Solid technical understanding of information technology redundancy and failover knowledge a plus
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and root cause analysis
