Your Specific Responsibilities:

This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

 

Serves as coordinator of epidemiological surveillance and investigation activities related to the Health Care-Associated Infection Prevention Program. Provides technical assistance to Department of Health headquarters, regional epidemiologists, and county health department staff regarding healthcare-associated infections and infection control protocols. Collaborate with other programs as appropriate within the Bureau regarding case and outbreak investigations in health care facilities.

 

Serve as the state subject matter expert for health care associated infections by consulting with and providing technical assistance to Department of Health staff, state laboratories, health-care facilities, and other local, state, and federal agencies needing assistance. Oversee and review the development of training tools, presentations, and webinars.

 

Collaborate with Surveillance staff on the maintenance of computerized databases and ensure quality reviews for accuracy of data.


Coordinate and facilitate the Florida HAI Advisory Board ensuring minutes are taken and distributed. Also manage any statewide HAI initiatives or projects.


Provide technical subject matter expertise in healthcare-associated infections and infection control protocols for grant applications by drafting plans to complete grant deliverables. Ensure grant progress reports are completed on time.


Participate as requested to share on-call duty assignments with other staff, in order to provide continuous 24-hour telephone coverage for the Bureau of Epidemiology. Weekly assignments will occur approximately every 4 to 6 weeks depending upon the number of staff involved. The incumbent will be expected to be available to accept all incoming after-hour (5pm to 8pm) weekday, weekend and holiday calls, assess the urgency of each call and provide an appropriate response. On occasion a regarding selected “Hot Button” diseases (i.e. exposure to rabies, suspect botulism or bacterial meningitis case) or a community-wide emergency (i.e. foodborne outbreak, hurricane, tornado, bioterrorism alert) will require extensive follow-up and coordination with other agencies etc. that is beyond the scope of the on-call assignment. Is available for indeterminate periods, as needed, for disaster response.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of epidemiology, including an understanding of the effects of the interaction between populations, causative factors, and environment. Knowledge and understanding of program policies and administrative guidance related to surveillance and investigation of infectious and non-infectious disease conditions. Ability to communicate in writing. Ability to communicate orally. Ability to analyze, evaluate, research and interpret scientific guidelines/protocols, policies, and regulations. Ability to develop program materials and coordinate trainings. Skills related to mentoring and supervising staff. Ability to supervise staff, assign duties, provide performance evaluations, and manage human resource-related tasks.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications-

  • High school diploma

 

Preferred Qualifications –

  • A master’s degree or higher in epidemiology or similar field or nursing degree with certification in infection control and having completed coursework in epidemiology.
  • Three years of experience in Health care Associated Infection Investigations
  • Management or supervisory experience
  • Certified in Infection Control (CIC)
