CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and four (4) years of experience in systems networking, systems administration, two years of which must have been in network administration; or A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the computer sciences, management information systems, network administration, or information technology. 
  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours for each year of the required non-networking experience, provided such education includes two courses in one of the areas described above. 
  • Vocational/technical training in one of the areas described above can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours per year for a maximum of two years of the required non-networking experience.  Completion of a vendor-supplied program of study of four or more weeks in networking can substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Requires possession of a valid Driver's License.
  • Position requires travel as needed.

 

Description of Position:

The Florida State Guard (FSG) is seeking a skilled Network Specialist to manage and maintain the organization’s network infrastructure with a strong emphasis on Cisco routers, switches, firewalls, star link satellite systems, and wireless access points. This role is responsible for ensuring network security, performance, and reliability across all systems.  

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot Cisco routers, switches, firewalls, star link satellite systems and wireless access point.
  • Implement and manage network security policies, firewalls, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  • Perform regulatory vulnerability assessments and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor network traffic and logs to detect and respond to suspicious activity.
  • Manage VPNs, secure remote access, and user authentication mechanisms.
  • Maintain documentation of network architecture, configurations, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with IT teams on projects, upgrades, and incident response.
  • Provide support for network-related issues and participate in after-hours maintenance when necessary.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):

  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Assist with compliance audits and risk assessments.
  • Support the integration of new technologies into existing infrastructure.
  • Willingness to stay up to date on the latest IT trends, threats, and technologies through self-study, training, and industry certifications.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPIRIENCE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of conceptual understanding of enterprise WAN and LAN networking technologies and architectures.
  • Knowledge of security best practices to evaluate security risks, mitigation strategies and strengths of networks against modern threat vectors.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Products, including Operations Systems, Office Suite and Outlook in a networked environment.
  • Skills at installing and providing technical support for software applications and operating systems.
  • Experience in network topologies to design, implement, and support wire/wireless data infrastructure.
  • Experience in configuring, troubleshooting and maintaining star link satellite systems.
  • Ability in understanding product roadmaps and industry trends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, understand, and comply with the department’s policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices relating to industry standards.
