Description of Job

This position provides paralegal services handling Department civil and appellate litigation. Duties include: preparing drafts of court pleadings, drafting intermediate to complex correspondence and legal documents, performing legal research & data collection, managing attorney's calendar and preparing attorney for court hearings and conferences to include travel, maintain extensive specialized litigation files, utilize an online legal case management system for tracking all litigation and correspondence files, and provide all office upkeep and support.


Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Two years’ experience working in a legal office as a paralegal and/or administrative.
  • One-year experience drafting legal documents.


Additional preference will be given for experience with:

  • Court filing requirements
  • Online legal research tools
  • Civil appellate or administrative litigation
  • MFMP
  • State travel rules and regulations
  • Outlook for scheduling


Special Note

The position you are applying is subject to a Level 2 background and CJIS security clearance, to include fingerprinting as a condition of employment pursuant to Chapter 110.1127, 435 and 943, Florida Statutes.  As an applicant for positions requiring CJIS security clearance, you are required to disclose criminal records that have been sealed or expunged.

  • Ability to effectively interact with all customers with courtesy and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information.


General Information

The elements of the selection process may include a skill assessment and/or oral interview.

Applicants being considered for employment will be required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation, which will include a check of the criminal history records of the FBI.

The process for selecting applicant(s) for this position could take up to six months.  Following the six-month period, a new application must be submitted to an open advertisement in order to be considered for that vacancy.


HSMV employees are paid once a month on the last workday of each month.  All state employees are required to participate in the direct deposit program pursuant to s. 110.113 Florida Statutes.
