The Office of the Public Defender, Second Judicial Circuit is accepting applications for a Felony Division Investigator I.
Our Organization and Mission:
The Office of the Public Defender, Second Judicial Circuit provides legal representation for indigent individuals accused of criminal offenses. The Second Judicial Circuit encompasses six Florida counties: Leon, Gadsden, Liberty, Jefferson, Wakulla and Franklin.
Each fiscal year, the Second Judicial Circuit represents indigent clients in both criminal trial and criminal appeal appointments, equating to nearly 16,500 criminal cases for six (6) Florida counties and over 1,100 cases on appeal for the 32 counties that make up the First District Court of Appeal.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As part of the office defense team, the duties and responsibilities of the investigator will include:
- Conduct in-depth client intake interviews,
- Examine State’s discovery reports and probable cause affidavits,
- Locate and / or interview witnesses,
- View, photograph, and assess evidence,
- Coordinate court appearances for clients and witnesses,
- Serve subpoenas,
- Conduct background investigations,
- Collect records,
- Testify in court,
- Assist in securing social information for mitigation,
- Use computer related search and identification programs,
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in criminology, criminal justice or other investigative fields, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Our office will provide in-house training and certification through the Criminal Defense Investigation Training Council.
- An equivalency diploma issued by a state department of education may be substituted for high school graduation.
- Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely as you must be able to prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive reports containing findings, conclusions, and/or recommendations
- Valid Florida Driver’s License. Local travel – within the judicial circuit – is required.
Starting Salary:
- $40,000.00 annually; negotiable commensurate with experience.
