General Summary

The Research and Engagement Assistant is one of a three-member team responsible for maintaining the current and historical records and legislation of the House of Representatives. During session, they assist in operating the vote board, withdrawing amendments, and other legislative procedures on the House floor. Outside of session, they assist with the House’s public engagement efforts such as writing educational resources and providing tours of the House Chamber, as well as assist in a variety of special projects for the Clerk of the House, which may include writing, research and creative initiatives.  This position offers unique exposure to the innerworkings of the Florida House and opportunities to contribute to projects requiring strong communication skills, attention to detail, sound judgement and creativity.  The ideal candidate is adaptable, curious, discreet and comfortable working in a dynamic environment where priorities may shift quickly.

Financial Disclosure: Pursuant to sections 112.3144 and 112.3145, Florida Statutes, this position is required to electronically file a Form 1 – Statement of Financial Interests with the Florida Commission on Ethics within 30 days of hire.

 

Examples of Work Performed

  • Conduct research and provide information in response to requests by House members and the general public.
  • Maintain and file legislative documents and records in permanent office files in a manner consistent with general office procedures.
  • Create and update documents and publications using various PC applications.
  • Answer office telephone lines, direct calls and/or email inquiries to the proper staff member, office or state agency, and perform other office maintenance tasks.
  • Operate the vote board and other legislative programs, applications and equipment.
  • Organize returning messages, withdraw bills and amendments, and assist members on the House floor.
  • Assist with public engagement efforts, such as welcoming visitors at the Legislative Welcome Center and contributing to the creation of educational resources.

  • Knowledge of administrative principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of research techniques and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Skills in customer service, problem-solving, and communication.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and review work for accuracy and quality of content.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and contribute to the efficient internal functioning of the unit.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the requests of legislators, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and maintain records.
  • Ability to work long hours, especially during session.

 

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of work experience.
A master's degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for the required experience.
Administrative experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the legislative process and ability to navigate Florida statutes and current/historical legislation is beneficial, but not required.
