SPECIAL NOTES:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major course in mathematics, statistics or insurance and four (4) years of professional experience in compiling and analyzing actuarial or statistical data; OR

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and completion of 80 credits by the Society of Actuaries exam syllabus or completion of three complete exams by the Casualty Actuarial exam syllabus is required.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel & Word or comparable computer applications.

The annual starting salary for this position is $46,381.20. 

This position requires a security background check, including fingerprint as a condition of employment. 

Employees of the Department of Financial Services are paid on a monthly pay cycle.  Responses to qualifying questions must be clearly supported by the State application and any omission, falsification or misrepresentation in the answering of the qualifying questions will be cause for immediate elimination from the selection process.

REQUIRED ENTRY-LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Knowledge of actuarial practices, principles, literature and standards of practice. 
  • Skill in applying actuarial principles and techniques; in compiling, organizing, analyzing and presenting data; in planning, organizing, prioritizing and coordinating work; in communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others; in Microsoft Excel, Word or comparable word processing application (version in use as Department standard). 
  • Ability to interpret and explain Florida insurance statutes, rules and procedures; to search for insurance data using Internet and other resources. 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
Knowledge of insurance rate filings; of economic principles; of databases.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Perform complex actuarial analyses of property and casualty rate filings. Review rate filings to determine compliance with state insurance laws and to determine if rate filings are excessive, inadequate or unfairly discriminatory.
  • Assist the supervising actuary(ies) in the preparation of recommendations based on actuarial analysis relating to rate filings, Research, prepare and submit data to support recommendations relative to actuarial analysis. 
  • Assemble, review and analyze data submitted using computer applications to perform actuarial work.  Design and implement procedures to ensure data integrity and retrieval for both enterprise and local systems.
  • Direct, conduct and supervise insurance- or data-related studies or projects per the Insurance Commissioner, Legislature, media and public requests.  Assist the actuaries and Senior Management in responding to requests from the Insurance Commissioner, Legislature, media, public records requests, consumers, other State and Federal agencies, NAIC and other professional agencies regarding insurance rates or rating practices. 
  • Assist management in the development of strategic plans and goals.  Consult all areas of the Office with issues or questions concerning actuarial matters and function as a business expert for the Office in industry operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervising actuary, the Bureau Chief, Senior Management or their designees.
