MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree with a major in Forestry or related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional forestry experience;

or A master’s degree with a major in Forestry or a related field from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional forestry experience.

A bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Forestry or a related field obtained outside the United States must either: 1) be obtained from a Society of American Foresters accredited college or university in addition to the applicable required experience above; or 2) curriculum must include at least two (2) of the following four (4) courses: Silviculture, Dendrology, Forest Mensuration or Forest Management in addition to the applicable required experience listed above.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

The anticipated hiring salary for this position is $39,915.72 annually.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a highly technical position responsible for a variety of forestry related programs on the Plank Road State Forest.  The incumbent must deal with forestry and environmental issues affecting both the public and state-owned forest land.

Provides technical forestry assistance on the Plank Road State Forest in the management of timberlands for maximum profits and sustained yield as well as balancing environmental concerns; provides timber marking and volume estimation and the sale of forest products; provides technical assistance in planning for multiple use of the forest and ensures that ecosystem management is practiced; prepares stands for direct seeding or contract planting; prepares contracts for all silvicultural operations and oversees these operations while in progress to ensure contractor compliance. This position may be required to perform Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) work, including FIA Certification by the United States Forest Service, or other federal programs.

Provides technical assistance in developing prescribed burning plans to ensure minimum impact of smoke and maximum use of assigned resources; evaluates prescribed burns before, during and after, to ensure that sound forest management objectives are met; participates in burns; secures the necessary training to conduct and participate in prescribed burning safely.

Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed.  Assists in the development of smoke management, wildfire prevention, prescribed fire, pre-suppression burning plans and hazardous fuels mitigation.  Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulations.

Maintains contact with cooperating agencies (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Division of Historical Resources, Department of State), environmental organizations and organizes user groups to ensure cooperative efforts and input into the management of the forest.

Performs other related duties as assigned, which may include the handling of revenue.
