POSITION SUMMARY:

This is an exciting opportunity within FDLE’s Information Technology Services (ITS) Division as an intermediate level Developer. The selected candidate will serve as a Java software programming analyst/developer in the development and maintenance of critical FDLE information systems through all stages of the application life cycle (design, review, testing, documentation, programming, and installation).  Training and mentoring will be provided in the software used at FDLE using approved development tools to perform the Java programming.  The developer will be responsible for testing all programming changes to ensure new functions work as designed and existing functions continue to work appropriately.  The developer will be taught how to document changes within their programming code itself, within the source code repository, and in other documentation to ensure the system can be easily maintained in the future. The person in this position will work closely with business customers to learn their needs and accurately translate them to technology requirements and solutions.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties include:

  • Software will be written using the approved development tools and languages in a consistent manner with the style of existing programs;
  • Working closely with the customers to learn their needs, and accurately translate them to text or diagrams, as appropriate;
  •  Documenting changes within the software itself, the source code repository, and in other external documentation to ensure the system can be easily maintained in the future;
  • Testing software thoroughly to ensure new functions work as designed and existing functions continue to work appropriately;
  • Completing all projects within the time frame agreed to jointly by the member, the requester, and the member’s supervisor;
  • Working with customer representatives and FDLE staff to identify their needs and accurately translate them in to functional and non-functional requirements;
  • Creating process flow diagrams and design documentation using various standard practices;
  • Writing the software to perform as required for the business customer;
  • Staging the software in preparation of production implementation;
  • Creating and maintaining documentation for programming, operations and maintenance, and end users regarding the databases and related applications and systems;
  • Performing testing on applications developed or maintained within BSE/ITS; and
  • Designing and writing standards and ad hoc reports as requested by business customers.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of object-oriented design principles used in computer programming;
  • Knowledge of writing computer programs using MS-SQL Server and/or Oracle relational databases;
  • Skilled in writing computer programs with various programming languages and ability to adapt to learn new programming languages;
  • Skilled in performing basic testing techniques for computer applications to find defects prior to releasing for customer testing;
  • Ability to learn how to write complex computer programs using Java and SQL;
  • Ability to listen in customer meetings and translate into user requirements;
  • Ability to think logically and analyze alternatives;
  • Ability to prepare process flow diagrams as well as other types of flowcharts for application documentation;
  • Ability to follow computer application development standards and procedures;
  • Ability to communicate with business customers clearly and accurately; and
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments in order to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work.

BASE SALARY:

BACKGROUND:

FDLE requires an extensive background process of all recommended applicants.
