GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

Linux Administrator

This is highly technical work focused on planning, installing, securing, customizing, and maintaining enterprise AIX and Linux operating systems, middleware, and critical business application platforms. The position supports both on-premises and cloud-hosted environments, including IBM Power/AIX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and related toolchains.

 

The Technical Analyst II is responsible for the availability, performance, recoverability, and lifecycle management of platforms including (but not limited to): IBM Workload Automation, SAP BusinessObjects, Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Cloud, IBM Storage Protect (formerly Tivoli Storage Manager / Spectrum Protect), IBM WebSphere, Oracle WebLogic, Maestro LISTSERV, GitHub-based deployment workflows, and associated web/edge tiers (HTTP servers, caching proxies, load balancers).

 

This position also contributes to security hardening and audit readiness, including patching, configuration management, and implementation of technical controls. The role designs, documents, and tests disaster recovery (DR) and continuity-of-operations procedures for mission-critical business processes that rely on these systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Promotes and supports the Lottery’s Responsible Gaming program. Ensures “No Underage Play” and “Play Within Your Means” messaging is communicated to retailers and players when applicable.
  • Designs, installs, configures, maintains, upgrades, and troubleshoots AIX and Linux operating systems and core middleware components, including:
    • IBM WebSphere Application Server / Network Deployment
    • Oracle WebLogic Server
    • IBM Workload Automation (IBM Workload Scheduler / TWS / IWA)
    • SAP BusinessObjects / Business Intelligence platform
    • Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) Cloud
    • Maestro LISTSERV
    • IBM Storage Protect backup / recovery infrastructure
    • Supporting web tiers, caching layers, and load balancing components
  • Administers source code and configuration repositories in GitHub, including promotion processes, environment branching standards, and controlled deployment workflows.
  • Builds and maintains secure, supportable environments across development, test/QA, pre-production/standby, and production. Defines and documents procedures for moving code, configurations, and content safely between environments.
  • Implements and follows disciplined change management and release management practices for production, QA, test, and DR systems. Generates, reviews, and maintains implementation plans and backout plans.
  • Plans and performs system patching, hotfixes, and firmware updates for AIX, Linux, WebSphere, WebLogic, AEM, BusinessObjects, and other supported platforms. Evaluates security advisories, applies vendor fixes, and researches compatibility impacts before rollout.
  • Designs, documents, and tests backup, restore, and disaster recovery procedures using IBM Storage Protect and other approved technologies. Validates recovery time and recovery point objectives for regulated or high-value business services.
  • Monitors system health, performance, capacity, and job/automation schedules. Tunes AIX and Linux systems (e.g., CPU, memory, I/O, filesystem, kernel parameters) to meet stability, performance, and availability targets.
  • Supports and maintains enterprise scheduling and automation routines in IBM Workload Automation, including troubleshooting job failures, adjusting schedules, and coordinating batch window expectations with business owners.
  • Supports enterprise reporting and analytics workloads in SAP BusinessObjects, including service availability, connectivity to data sources, authentication/authorization behavior, and performance of scheduled report delivery.
  • Supports enterprise messaging, email list management, and outbound communications platforms such as Maestro LISTSERV, including security configuration and delivery reliability.
  • Assists with content delivery and web publishing platforms such as Adobe Experience Manager Cloud, including deployment of content bundles, dispatcher/cache behavior, and integration with downstream application tiers.
  • Works with vendors and service providers during problem analysis, root cause investigation, incident response, and technical research.
  • Produces and maintains clear, repeatable technical documentation for operations staff, including end-to-end startup/shutdown, error recovery, escalation guidelines, and DR procedures.
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call rotation or after-hours support for priority systems, maintenance windows, and incident response.
  • Provides mentorship, knowledge transfer, and technical guidance to team members, application developers, and business stakeholders as needed.
  • Delivers regular status updates to management regarding system health, risks, upcoming changes, and roadmap items in areas of responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Linux system administration (installing, configure, patch, secure, monitor, troubleshoot).
  • Working knowledge of AIX system administration or the ability to learn it rapidly.
  • Experience with one or more of the following enterprise platforms is desirable (not all are required):

  • Familiarity with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) services and tooling is a plus.

  • Knowledge of data processing concepts, systems and network terminology, and client/server and web-based architectures.
  • Ability to analyze performance, capacity, and reliability issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ability to develop, test, and debug scripts, tools, or utilities to automate routine operational tasks.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain, and present clear technical documentation, runbooks, implementation plans, and status reports.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical information and communicate effectively with non-technical management and business customers.
  • Ability to follow formal change management, release management, and incident management processes.
  • Ability to participate in on-call rotation and respond to production-impacting issues outside normal business hours.
