The State University System of Florida invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice Chancellor / Chief Academic Officer. The Florida Board of Governors is the constitutionally created body that oversees the System, ensuring its well-planned coordination and operation. The 17-member Board appoints a Chancellor who serves as the chief executive and administrative officer of the System. The Vice Chancellor reports directly to the Chancellor and provides leadership, management, and direction relative to the Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) Office — the unit responsible for providing leadership and coordination via collaborative policy development, strategic planning, analysis, and research for academic, student, research, and economic development issues that affect the System.

The Chancellor is seeking a dynamic academic leader committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence, with a strong understanding of contemporary and emerging issues in higher education, who values intellectual diversity, is committed to civil discourse, is actively engaged with national associations in the fields of public policy and administration — balancing an ability to manage high-level, system-wide issues while contributing to critical deliverables such as the annual Accountability Plans. The Vice Chancellor works closely with the Board of Governors and key university leaders, as well as other educational, governmental, and community partners, to address concerns and opportunities that rise to a System level of interest.

 

The Vice Chancellor:

  • Serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Executive Management Team, providing guidance and direction regarding policies and procedures to ensure effective and efficient outcomes supportive of the Board of Governors’ constitutional responsibilities.
  • Represents the Chancellor and the Board before legislative committees and meets or confers with legislative staff on matters affecting the universities.
  • Under the direction of the Chancellor, serves as a spokesperson to external regulatory groups at federal and state levels, civic and professional organizations, and other groups.
  • Provides leadership and counsel regarding the Board of Governors strategic plan.
  • Ensures consistent implementation of academic and student affairs policies specified in Florida state statutes and Board of Governors’ regulations
  • Review correspondence, memoranda, reports, proposed regulation changes, all legislative bill analyses, and other policy drafts; make recommendations when applicable.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to the System’s Council of Academic Vice Presidents, Council for Student Affairs, and other academic organizations such as the Institutions’ Research Vice Presidents. as directed by the Chancellor.
  • Staffs and/or presents at specified Board Committee and full Board meetings as directed by the Chancellor.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned a terminal degree or advanced graduate degree
  • Earned tenure at an accredited institution
  • Held at least five years of proven higher education administration leadership in large, complex academic settings — preferably at a campus or a system office
  • Have experience working directly with a governing board
  • Understands both the Florida system and campus governance
  • Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of institutional and programmatic accreditation
  • Have experience establishing and overseeing strategic partnerships
  • Be a master of collaboration and possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
