The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

 

Advanced Practice Registered Nurse:

This is an internal opportunity only. Only current DOH employees will be considered.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is specialized nursing work diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic illness, independently or as part of a healthcare team under the supervision of the Director of Nursing with additional direction of Medical Director. Focus on health promotion and disease prevention.

Orders, performs, or interprets diagnostic tests such as lab work and x rays. May prescribe medication. Must be a registered nurse and have specialized, graduate nursing education.

Conduct comprehensive clinical assessments, including sexual health history and risk evaluation for HIV, STIs, viral hepatitis, and family planning.                             

Diagnose, treat, and manage acute medical conditions, including infectious diseases such as HIV, STIs, TB infection, and viral hepatitis using DOH, CDC, and federal clinical and programmatic guidelines.

Prescribe medications recommended vaccines following Florida statutes and DOH protocols.

Order and interpret diagnostic and point-of-care tests.                                     

Develop individualized treatment and follow-up plans consistent with public health and evidence-based standards.   

Documents clinical services accurately and ensure compliance with DOH standards, reporting requirements, and regulatory policies.   

Provide patients with disease prevention and health promotion education.  

Assist with vaccination efforts for populations at increased risk for vaccine-preventable diseases.

Coordinate referrals to case management, Ryan White services, behavioral health, and community support programs.

Collaborate with epidemiology staff on surveillance, reporting, response efforts, including communicable disease case review, outbreak investigations, linkage-to-care activities, and specimen collection.

Offer clinical guidance, training, and support to nursing and clinical staff related to HIV/STI/hepatitis services.

Participate in emergency preparedness and public health response activities involving infectious disease events.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Active listening and appropriate inquiry to understand patient and colleague needs.  

Understanding of human biology, disease processes, pathogens, and their interaction with the environment. 

Knowledge of clinical chemistry, medication properties, drug interactions, and safe handling and disposal of substances.  

Proficiency with written, verbal, and visual communication methods for patient education and public health messaging.

Skill in using logic and analysis to evaluate options, identify problems, and make sound clinical decisions.     

Understanding of instructional and training methods for educating patients, staff, and community partners.

Ability to work effectively in high-volume, resource-limited environments.

Knowledge of clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and preventive health measures.                           

Ability to accurately identify and analyze patient health problems.        

Knowledge of public health principles and population health strategies.

Intermediate computer skills proficiency level with Microsoft 365 applications, and Internet or Internet/Intranet-based systems such as PeopleFirst and Health Management System (HMS); MS Teams knowledge a plus.

Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as computers, printers, fax machines and paper shredder.

Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (preferred). 

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum:

Florida Advanced Practice Registered Nurse License per F.S. 464.012

Florida Driver’s License Required

Basic Life Saving (BLS) Training Certification

At least three years of clinical experience working with family health, acute, chronic, or infectious disease patient populations

At least two years of client/patient customer service experience

  • Preferred:

Phlebotomy training or certification

Bilingual English/Spanish
