Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is an independent, professional supervisory position serving as the Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) Supervisor assigned to the AMD Unit of the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories (BPHL) in Tampa. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Director. Duties are performed under general supervision and involve considerable responsibility and authority. Duties are related to the molecular examination of specimens for the detection of disease agents, primarily using sequencing methods. This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.

 

Plans workloads, workflows, deadlines, and work objectives with employees:

Evaluates employees by establishing evaluation criteria and responsibilities.

Communicates on a regular basis with employees both individually and in staff meetings. 

Makes decisions on appropriate technical procedures to be implemented.

Oversees inventory and ordering of supplies and reagents.

Is accessible to employees while testing is performed to resolve technical problems.

Ensures established testing requirements are met related to funding deliverables or as assigned by the Laboratory Director.

 

Oversees quality assurance, quality control, and proficiency testing for assigned areas of the AMD Unit in accordance with BPHL Tampa AMD Unit requirements. Maintains clinical laboratory certification. Maintains appropriate equipment service contracts. Establishes and periodically evaluates safety measures in accordance with internal and external regulations.

 

Plans, schedules, supervises others, and participates in Molecular detection from a variety of clinical and non-clinical specimens using high complexity assays (primarily AMD assays including sequencing), Development and validation of new assays, Training employees and students in the performance of molecular assays following established standard operating procedures.

 

Result analysis, result review, and preparation of laboratory reports, including approving test results in the Laboratory Information Management System. Communicates with clients and advises on result interpretation. Prepares, reports on, and meets deliverables from funding requirements or as assigned by the Laboratory Director. 

 

Coordinates and communicates with BPHL and Tampa laboratory leadership, county health department staff, and Bureau of Epidemiology staff to improve processes and ensure effective testing of specimens. Communicates specimen submission guidelines. Develops and makes presentations to the public, partners in the DOH, and other agencies.

Participates in public health research projects; participates in scope and design process; supervises laboratory activities; and participates in data creation, data maintenance, analysis, report preparation, presentation, and development of manuscripts for publication.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in biological research, analysis, or testing of clinical specimens.

Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in a laboratory.

Skill in the use of lab equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

 

Qualifications:

Minimum – State of Florida Clinical Laboratory License as a Laboratory Technician (Microbiology or Public Health Microbiology), Chapter 483 F.S and Rule 64B3 F.A.C or eligible for license. Bachelor’s degree or higher in a chemical or biological science.

 

Preferred – State of Florida Clinical Laboratory License as a Laboratory Supervisor or higher (Microbiology or Public Health Microbiology). Three years of laboratory experience.
