The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Biological Scientist I:

Working under the direct supervision of an Environmental Epidemiologists - SES, the incumbent serves in a developmental capacity, providing direct disease and public health awareness intervention activities under the auspices of the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program, including but not limited to Partner Services (PS), epidemiological cases analysis and investigations, notification, counseling and referral services of individuals exposed to or at-risk of infection from Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis, Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), HIV/AIDS, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Syphilis and other bacterial, viral or biological agents.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Provides PS to a wide variety of individuals infected with or at-risk of a STDs (as identified under duties and responsibilities above) to elicit partner and suspect information.  Uses information for epidemiological analysis to identify the source and spread of cases related to the known infection(s).

Conducts field investigations to locate and provide Field Directed Therapy to individuals infected with Chlamydia/Gonorrhea and/or to refer individuals infected with or suspected to be at-risk of infection for STDs for counseling, medical evaluation and/or treatment.

Performs case management activities as directed in the process of discovering and/or identifying infected individuals.  These activities will include but are not limited to:  work prioritization and records documentation and management, clustering, HIV pre- and post-test counseling, visual case analysis and epidemiological techniques, data entry and/or other related activities.

Completes required records and reports including case management forms, laboratory request forms, travel reimbursement forms, HMC service codes, Employee Activity Report (EARs), etc. in accordance with current CHD and STD Program policies and/or procedures.

Qualifications:

Minimum –

• Valid Florida driver’s license or able to get one within 30 days of hire.
• Reliable transportation (i.e., automobile) and willing to use your own vehicle to perform field activities and transport of patients and/or specimens (blood/urine) when necessary.
• At least one year of clients/patients interviewing experience to obtain relevant information.
• At least one year of client/patient customer service experience.
• Willing to draw/handle patients’ urine, blood and/or sputum specimens potentially infected with communicable disease such as Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis, TB, and HIV/AIDS, or other emerging diseases (like Zika, COVID-19, and Mpox).

Preferred-

• At least 60 semester credits from an accredited college towards a Bachelor of Science degree.
• Phlebotomy training or certification
• Bilingual in English, Spanish and/or Haitian Creole
