NOTE:  This is a part-time position, the incumbent will work aproximately 30 hours per week during the racing season at the State Detention Barn at Tampa Bay Downs race track, at the rate of $44 per hour.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  A current State of Florida license in veterinary medicine.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • The incumbent of this position will spend 75 percent of time collecting specimen samples (blood) from racing animals following strict chain-of-custody procedures to ensure evidential integrity of test results and be prepared to serve as an expert witness during administrative hearings regarding impermissible medications. 
  • The state veterinarian will observe the overall health of the horses and be prepared to recommend to the Stewards the scratching (disqualifying) of any horse considered to be unsound or unfit to race or that a “special” urine and/or blood sample be collected from any horse suspected of not performing according to form.
  • The state veterinarian reports directly to the Regional Supervisor, but is required to work closely with the detention barn supervisor and staff.
  •  Incumbent should be comfortable working in a barn/stable environment including the ability to walk on various surfaces, such as dirt and shavings/straw for several hours; must be able to perform work in inclement weather conditions; must be available to work afternoons and evenings, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
