The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.
Senior Public Health Nutritionist (SPHN)
The incumbent certifies clients. Identifies nutrition risks based on the assessment of the nutrition questionnaire, health data and health history. Provides and documents client centered nutrition education, goal(s) and refers to other services. Focuses on meeting the needs of medically high-risk clients.
A valid and current Florida License to practice dietetics is required for this position.
Your Specific Responsibilities:
- Certifies clients. Identifies nutrition risks based on the assessment of the nutrition questionnaire, health data and health history. Assigns food packages based on nutrition assessment and program criteria. Focuses on meeting the needs of medically high risk.
- Provides breastfeeding education, support, and referrals.
- Collects anthropometric data by conducting height/stature and weight measurements. Performs fingers sticks to assess hemoglobin levels of Women, Infants and Children participants.
- Develops, documents, and implements nutrition care plans based on assessments of nutrition needs and other current health plans, and provides follow up and referral as needed.
- Provides WIC nutrition assessments and counseling to clients on normal and therapeutic diets. Provides 2nd nutrition education contacts for all clients in the family record and high risk/medical. Utilizes the high-risk report to monitor 2nd contact compliance. Audits records.
- Assists to assure proper clinic operations. In the absence of the supervisor, performs supervisory functions, oversees clinic operations, and resolves issues.
- Provides individual and group education sessions for clients and others as needed (e.g. Subjective Objective Assessment Plan (SOAP) notes, nutrition questionnaire assessments, goal setting).
- Submits reports such as travel, People First and Health Management System (HMS) within the timeframe assigned.
- At times employee may be scheduled or assigned to work in other locations within Hillsborough County; travels to clinics and performs other duties as assigned for the Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor or Program Manager.
- If fluent in another language, you may be required to assist with translating to ensure quality.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal Women, Infants and Children Program policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of current science and practice of food, nutrition and dietetics; normal nutrition principles and dietary needs throughout the life cycle.
- Ability to assess appropriate and effective feeding for women, infants and children.
- Effectively counsel using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) techniques.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to use computer, digital scale, balance scale, stature board, Hemocue machine, copier, telephone.
- Computer skills: thorough knowledge, skills and ability to use Excel, Word, Outlook, FL-WiSE.
- Excellent customer service skills, maintains client confidentiality and effective working relationships.
- Ability to lift and transfer all supplies required to perform job duties.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Bachelor of Science degree or master's degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home Economics with emphasis in Nutrition per WIC Federal Regulation, CFR, Title 7, Part 246.
- This occupation requires that the incumbents meet the requirements outlined in Chapter 468, Part X, Florida Statutes, or be eligible to practice dietetics in accordance with Chapter 64B8-40 to 45, Florida Administrative Code.
- Valid State of Florida License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance
- Valid Florida Drivers’ License is required to obtain reimbursement for travel according to policy
