The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

 

Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor – Outreach

This position supervises professional and support employees who provide WIC Outreach, breastfeeding and nutrition services. Provides direct services and reports to Public Health Nutrition Consultant (WIC Coordinator). This position is also responsible for supervising the planning, implementing and evaluating of the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program and components of Nutrition Services such as Medical Nutrition Therapy and nutrition counseling services.

Must have good communication, writing and organizational skills to meet the established guidelines for the WIC program and provides services in accordance with DHM 150-24.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

The majority of this job is overseeing WIC Outreach and Breastfeeding services and the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program throughout Hillsborough County. This position represents Women, Infant and Children Program at meetings, plans all WIC Outreach activities, and develops community partnerships. 

A valid and current Florida License to practice dietetics is required for this position.

As a supervisor; trains, motivates, evaluates and monitors the daily work activities of Senior Public Health Nutritionist, Nutrition Educator, and consults with health care practitioners to determine nutrition or health needs and diet prescription of WIC clients. Develops, documents and implements nutrition care plans based on assessments of nutrition needs and other current health plans, and provides follow up and referral as needed. Prepares materials for Outreach activities; and reports as requested by Federal and State auditors.  Coordinates with the Public Health Nutrition Consultant regarding the yearly DOH report of our Nutrition Program and WIC Nutrition Program Plan. Review and approve menus to meet the nutritional needs of the intended population. Conducts and/or attends health related meetings, staff meetings, committees, and work groups. Oversees the Outreach Program and Breastfeeding activities, Health Fairs and other Community activities. Mentors other professional staff and coordinates activities to meet learning outcomes as a preceptor for dietetic programs. Provides nutrition services and participates in programs to promote nutrition, wellness and healthier lifestyles. Completes WIC certifications by providing nutrition assessments and counseling to clients on normal and therapeutic diets.  Provides breastfeeding education and support to WIC clients.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of the current science and practice of nutrition or dietetics.
  • Knowledge of the concepts and theories of dietetics or nutrition as it relates to growth, development, health or disease.
  • Knowledge of the methods of compiling, organizing and analyzing data.
  • Knowledge of nutritional and dietary assessment techniques.
  • Ability to plan and conduct a nutrition program or project.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret anthropometric, biochemical, dietary and clinical data.
  • Ability to develop and apply educational/training plans and materials. Ability to develop educational/training techniques to learning.
  • Ability to use various communication channels to provide educational/training.
  • Ability to identify needs and develop programs or projects to meet the needs of the community or patient group(s).
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.   
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to provide nutrition education to others.
  • Ability to make nutritional assessments and develop nutrition care plans.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports. Ability to lift ten pounds.
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel and Power Point are necessary.
