The Work You Will Do:

Traffic Specialist IV – Safety / District Seven / Director of Transportation Development / District Safety

 

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is seeking a professional to manage safety-related service contracts and agreements, oversee project deliverables, and coordinate with internal teams and external agencies to support traffic safety operations. This role includes conducting construction site safety audits, supporting statewide safety initiatives like Target Zero, participating in outreach and education campaigns, and preparing engineering reports and strategic safety plans. The position also assists in planning and performance tracking to ensure resources are aligned with safety goals and SMART objectives. Travel may be required.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

 

Develop and manage professional and contractual service contracts, and other types of agreements that support traffic safety. This includes project management responsibilities associated with procuring contracts, issuing task work orders, reviewing contract deliverables, reviewing and processing invoices, coordinating Department personnel and other agencies associated with work under the contract, preparing contract correspondence, maintaining project files, and actively participating in project meetings.

Participates in meetings on committees, task teams and other groups with internal and external customers to represent traffic safety interests. Includes, providing useful commentary and review of work products as well as developing correspondence and follow-up contact as needed. Leads the District Impaired Driving Education Advisory Committee and the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement Program. Plans, coordinates, and assists in Road Safety Audits (RSA) for on-system highways. Supports local agencies with RSAs for off-system highways.

Coordinates safety audits of construction work sites. Issues orders to shut down activities when judgment indicates that imminent danger to life and/or property exists in accordance with Construction Project Administration Manual Chapter 9 - Maintenance of Traffic and Safety. Prepares and transmits official reports of inspections, consultations, and recommended corrective action to employers, establishing mandatory abatement periods and scheduling follow-up inspections to verify correction of violations. Participates in meetings with Construction Office, Operations Office. Tracks, analyzes, reviews Work Zone related crashes and prepares presentations, reports or memos related to findings in coordination with the Safety Administrator, District Construction Engineer and District Safety Engineer.  

Coordinates with the District Traffic Safety Program Engineer regarding county, Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), or Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) Vision Zero or similar Local Safety Action Plans. Maintains effective contact with local organizations to ensure information exchange on local safety issues. Facilitates and participates in safety education campaigns along with implementing outreach strategies to promote safety. Travels as necessary.

Develop and review engineering reports and studies.  This includes preparing and disseminating the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) tracking reports, study documentation and presentation of findings and conclusions, analysis of engineering data, and coordination of resources necessary to produce reports.

Assist the Traffic Safety Program Engineer in implementing business and related plans to guide resource allocation and achieve unit performance targets. Includes collaborating with others in plan development, reporting plan results, linking performance targets to SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) objectives in staff expectations, and identifying and making resource recommendations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma and six years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or An associate of arts or science degree in engineering technology and five years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering technology and four years of engineering, traffic studies, or traffic safety experience; or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and has an Engineer in Trainee (EIT) certification in either Florida or another State; or an active International Municipal and Signal Association (IMSA) Sign and Pavement Marking certification.
