CRIMINAL DEFENSE INVESTIGATOR

Job Description

 

The Public Defender’s Office, 15th Judicial Circuit (PD-15), has an open position in the Investigation Unit. 

 

PD-15 is a client-centered, dynamic advocacy office providing representation to people whose lives and liberty are at stake. We are dedicated to protecting, defending, and upholding the constitutional rights of indigent persons to receive high-quality legal representation, fair treatment, and equal justice. The office handles close to 30,000 cases per year and has approximately 200 employees including attorneys, investigators, social workers, and support staff.

 

We are interested in hiring hard-working, dedicated problem solvers to assist in our rewarding work.  Our investigators collaborate with attorneys, other investigators, mental health experts, forensic experts, and social service specialists.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid Florida driver license and a good driving record are required.
  • Ability to pass a FDLE criminal background check, which allows investigators into the jail to meet with our clients.
  • Proficiency in a second language (Creole or Spanish) including reading and writing is a preference.
  • Commits to working full time, in person.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Locate and interview clients, complainants, witnesses, and others who may have information relevant to a case.
  • Confer with the attorneys on strategies to defend a case.
  • Testify in court regarding facts established by investigations.
  • Locate, obtain, evaluate, and preserve documentary evidence from a variety of sources.
  • Provide prompt, efficient, and responsive service to management, the attorneys, and/or the clients.
  • Prepare oral and written reports and updates regarding investigations performed, and contacts made.
  • Conduct searches of technology resources.
  • Use a laptop and MS Office suite, jail and court technology programs, and client management databases.
  • Serve subpoenas for court appearance of defense witnesses.
