Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position, an employee of the Nassau County Health Department (NCHD), works to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts. - This position provides field support in the Environmental Health Department for Baker and Nassau County. The person filling this position is expected to acquire knowledge with all facets of the Environmental Health programs. They must have a working knowledge of Florida Statutes and Florida Admin. Codes.
- Works in the Food Hygiene program which involves reviewing applications and conducting food inspections for food service establishments by s. 381.0072, Florida Statute to help ensure their products are not a source of foodborne illness.
- Works in the onsite sewage disposal program (OSTDS) and reviews applications for individual lots to determine soil characteristics and water table elevations. Determines topographical conditions by establishing benchmarks using calibrated instrumentation. Classifies soil types, establishes ground water table elevations and makes decisions on the possibility of using an OSTDS. Reviews setback requirements to surface water, wells, property lines and other obstructions. Issues recommendations for the location, construction and maintenance of an OSTDS. Conducts construction inspections, final inspections, re-inspections, existing inspections and repair inspections. Reviews and approves the design of OSTDS for residential systems based on gallons per day of sewage flow. Approves and issues permits for individual OSTDS.
- Maintains the Environmental Health Database (EHD) and is responsible for the programmatic files associated with the department. Prepares Facility Program reports for the State Health Office. Enters all inspections into EHD within 72 hours of receipt from staff. Communicates with the Environmental Administrator of the implementation and status of EHD. The incumbent will be responsible for the issuance of EH permits as well as data entry in the Environmental Health Programs.
- Investigates complaints in any of the Environmental Health Programs as assigned affecting public health. Assists in resolution of environmental issues. Drafts proposed agency actions, prepares preliminary enforcement actions for non-compliance by issuance of Notice of Violation and Notice of Intended Administrative Actions. Issues citations as directed per applicable statutes codes.
- Greets and assists internal and external customers, answers the phone, screen calls, takes messages, receives information about programs such as animal bites, complaints, OSTDS, and in general performs work assigned in a courteous and respectful manner that presents a positive public image for Nassau and Baker County. As well as daily submission of DARS, biweekly submission of leave and attendance, monthly submission of mileage reimbursement, daily vehicle log, record maintenance, attending conferences and meetings necessary to carry out related duties and responsibilities.
- Investigates Rabies exposure cases in cooperation with the Nassau County Animal Control and the Rabies Prevention and Control in Florida guidebook.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to pay strict attention to detail and to perform thorough investigations and inspections in a timely manner.

- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients, co-workers, and other professionals
- Ability to use tools related to the field (laser transit, probe, auger, lid lifting devices, tripod, GPS/GSI equipment).
- Ability to work effectively with a team.
- Knowledge of Florida Statutes and Florida Administration Codes
- Knowledge of all facets of the Environmental Health programs.
- Ability to utilize common Microsoft programs
Qualifications:
Minimum-
- Must be a certified Florida Environmental Health Professional in both Food Protection and Onsite Program or a Registered Sanitation (NEHA or FEHA) within six months of hire.
- A bachelor's degree from an U.S. accredited college or university, with major course work in environmental health, environmental science or a physical or biological science.
- Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed
- Ability to work outdoors with various temperature changes.
- Knowledge of basic computer skills, the Environmental Health Database and Environmental Health Database Mobile Application.
- Ability to prioritize individual workload.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read maps and drive in unincorporated areas of Nassau and Baker Counties.
Preferred-
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and SharePoint
- Have conducted public health inspections, risk assessments, or audits either for a job or school
- Has experience communicating or educating the public
