Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position, an employee of the Nassau County Health Department (NCHD), works to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts. This individual will be responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring and selection, developing performance plans, conducting performance appraisals, planning and directing their work, approving leave, and taking disciplinary action as appropriate.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
As WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator:
- Promotes and supports breastfeeding efforts and initiatives.
- Ensures that staff training needs in breastfeeding promotion and support are met.
- Monitors the clinic environment to ensure that breastfeeding is endorsed as the normative method for infant feeding and that there is no evidence of promotion of artificial baby milk.
- Assists with the development of a system to provide consistent postpartum follow up in a timely manner.
- Participates in Florida WIC breastfeeding coordinator’s conference calls and trainings.
- Collaborates with and supports community partners to assist in the provision of consistent breastfeeding messages.
- Assists with the coordination of trainings and activities of breastfeeding peer counselors and WIC staff.
- Reviews requests for breastfeeding equipment and supplies and ensures that their inventories are completed.
- Provides high-risk or medically high-risk follow-up breastfeeding contact to WIC high-risk or medically high-risk clients. Assists the Public Health Nutrition Program Director in creating and maintaining agency internal operating procedures and policies relating to breastfeeding at work and the Peer Counseling Program. Responsible for ensuring that all appropriate agency staff are appropriately trained in breastfeeding and perform bi-annual audits of agency environments to ensure they remain breastfeeding friendly.
As Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator (BFPCC):
- Responsible for the breastfeeding peer counselor program.
- The incumbent in this position will have authorized “need to know” access to confidential WIC client records and the FL WISE WIC database.
- Assists in establishing peer counselor program goals/objectives/policies/procedures, as well as determining staffing needs for the program. Recruits and assists in the interviewing of potential peer counselors. Arranges for training/orientation of peer counselors, as well as acting as a mentor. Ensures quality by direct observation of counseling, group classes, and documentation performed by the peer counselor.
- Holds at the minimum monthly meetings with peer counselors on a routine basis. Monitors the program and reports findings to the Public Health Nutrition Program Director and the state breastfeeding coordinator.
- Works with other WIC breastfeeding coordinators/peer counselor managers to assess program for ongoing quality improvement opportunities.
- Provides breastfeeding support services through telephone contacts and group and/or individual support classes. Provides basic social services and breastfeeding education to WIC participants and records accurate data regarding client contacts. Coordinates and tracks all prenatal clients in Nassau/Baker County WIC Program.
- Collects documentation records from breastfeeding peer counselors upon completion of breastfeeding education and support for each client.
- Manages local breastfeeding telephone line by retrieving calls and coordinates return calls with breastfeeding peer counselors within a specified timeframe.
- Provides resources and educational materials to individuals and/or families about WIC services and provides breastfeeding peer counselor training classes as needed and regular in-service trainings. Completes forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required.
- Participates in appropriate WIC program and Health Department meetings and attends conferences and workshops as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as requested/required.
Qualifications:
Minimum-
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or have completed a minimum of 8 college courses from an accredited institution in the Health Sciences (suggested coursework includes but is not limited to the following areas: Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Biology, Infant Growth and Development, Nutrition, Counseling Skills, Sociology, Introduction to Clinical Research, etc.)
- Certification as a Lactation Counselor
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience counseling breastfeeding women
- Willing to work before, during and/or beyond your normal work hours in a Special Needs Shelter or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses involving any disaster or threat of disaster.
- Requires travel to all 5 Nassau/Baker WIC sites
- Valid Driver’s License
Preferred-
- Completion of 95-hour Certified Lactation Counselor Course
- Bilingual
- Current or previous employment with the Florida WIC program
